SEARCH HELP
This is the improved search window. Now in only one window, you can search for Building Type/Subject, Architect/Designer, Location /State orCountry and newly added Location/City, Description words that are not in another category, and Author or any combination of the above
Note that if the BUILDING TYPE/SUBJECT is further broken down into subcategories you will be asked to choose a subcategory or ‘all" after you click on SEARCH.
In general:
- Enter words as upper or lowercase in any combination. Spaces and punctuation do matter. Wild card notation is not used.
- Enter the least number of words.
- To print out the results of your search, click anywhere on listings that you want to print and then go to the "File" on your browser menu and select "Print" or "Print Frame".
To input ARCHITECT/DESIGNER or FIRM NAME: (and in general this applies to the other input boxes)
- Enter the shortest string to identify your choice. Example: for "Skidmore, Owings & Merrill" enter "Skidmore". (Of course, you will also get "Skidmore & Jones" if that name exists.)
- Entering "Bell" will get "Isabell" and "Belluschi" as well as "Bell".
- Entering "HOK" will get "HOK" and "HOK Sports", but not "Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum".
To input DESCRIPTOR WORDS:
- Search for words not in BUILDING TYPE OR SUBJECT or not in ARCHITECT/DESIGNER or not in LOCATION OF BUILDING: CITY or not in LOCATION OF BUILDING: STATE or not in COUNTRY or not in AUTHOR
- There are three boxes to enter the descriptor words.
- If you enter more than one word in any one box then the search will be on only the combination as entered.
- If you enter single words in one or more boxes and if they occur in any order in an article then it should be retrieved.
- Thus, in general it is better to enter words in separate boxes for a more efficient search. As an example, enter "insurance" in one box and "company" in another box instead of "insurance company" in one box..
- Try inputting different words or different combinations if the first attempt is not sucessful.
- NOTE: If you are searching for a word such as the name of a building that was not included in the input for a particular article, then it will not be found even though there is an article on the building that does not include its name. Try finding it by searching one or more of the other boxes
